Time is really flying! Fifth grade students worked very hard on their PSSA's and are now finished. All fifth grade teachers are very proud of the focus and attention students gave to their assessments. Despite testing, students still had the opportunity to enjoy fun activities over the past two weeks. These included; testing variables on self-made pendulums in science, using outdoor space to enjoy D.E.A.R. reading time, and having the opportunity to take a book walk and choose a novel that will be read in a book club. With the end of the school year quickly approaching, remember that you can find and record all important upcoming school dates at this link Students took part in many fun activities over the last few weeks! As part of Cumberland Valley's One District One Book initiative, they enjoyed vocabulary hat day in which they created hats representing a vocabulary word of choice. During Read Across America week, students had the opportunity to add our classroom door in a school- wide Dr. Suess door decorating contest. It came out great! Last week, they got the opportunity to welcome spring by heading outside to the trail to write in a natural setting. We look forward to more fun activities during the third trimester! After students completed their country research paper, they had the opportunity to create a brochure about the country they researched. Finished products were put in the hallway so that students in other grades could stop and read them! Students enjoyed the project. It gave them an opportunity to blend informational writing with creativity. During the second trimester, fifth grade has been focusing on informational text in language arts. As part of their studies, students are working on writing a research paper. Their paper is about a country they were interested in learning more about through research. Thus far, the project has created enthusiasm in the classroom and has been a great cross-curricular connection to geography and social studies!
On January 14, students traveled to York for their Biztown field trip. Students enjoyed spending the day working as a real-world citizen in a bustling economy! Check out the photos below! Students have been enjoying their study of civics and economics as part of the Biz Town curriculum. So far, students have participated in engaging activities related to citizenship, entrepreneurship, public and private goods, and taxes. To learn more about BizTown, click here. Fifth grades’ study of the BizTown curriculum is in preparation for our trip to the facility on January 14, 2016. Stay posted for more information regarding the trip in the upcoming weeks! Students had a fun week in fifth grade! On Wednesday the 21st, students had the opportunity to dress up for Middlesex's 80's themed day. The theme was a fun way to celebrate "Back to the Future Day." Additionally, students enjoyed the experience of identifying minerals by testing their properties in Science class. I have had a great time getting to know students and staff at Middlesex Elementary over the past month. Everyone has been so friendly and helpful. I am proud to call myself a a Mountain Lion!
We have taken part in several fun lessons and activities in fifth grade since my arrival. Among these have been: trips to the nature trail to observe erosion and deposition in the naturally occurring environment, hands-on science experiments about rocks, soil and the development of landforms, and our biography project presentations. I look forward to many more fun moments in fifth grade this year. Make sure to check the blog routinely to see what is happening in fifth grade! It's hard to believe that the 2014-2015 school year has come and gone. I can genuinely say I enjoyed every moment with this group of learners. All students had personal accomplishments in fourth grade that will continue to serve them throughout their academic journeys. I wish all students, parents and guardians a safe and enjoyable summer season. |
