Yesterday, students had the opportunity to end the first quarter by presenting a piece of research they worked on all quarter. During our unit on ecosystems, students picked an animal or plant that interested them. Then, they came up with an "I Wonder" about that particular animal or plant. Students spent time researching, using various sources, in order to find the answer to their wonder question. After finding their answer, they looked for other interesting facts about their topic of research. Students then drafted and typed an informative paragraph about their findings. Additionally, they created a portrait of their animal or plant with Ms. Mary Lou. Together, the portrait and informative paragraph formed a fabulous piece of work that students were very proud about creating. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the event happen! If you didn't get a chance to be there, here are a few photos from yesterday!

As part of our Social Studies unit on map skills, students created their own maps this week during class! Students were given the freedom to create a map of anything, make- believe or real. On their maps, students were asked to include the important parts of a map. It was a fun activity that allowed students to apply what they knew about maps in order to create their own. Check out the photos below!
In our classroom, students are given 15-20 minutes daily to pursue personal interests. Students are expected to show evidence of their personal endeavors on a daily basis. Their interests often lead to maker oriented products such as presentations, drawings, and assembled objects.
Recently, a group of students decided they would like to do something about the deforestation of the Rain Forest. They formed a group and came up with the idea to collect money in order to save the Rain Forest. They researched and found a valid website in which they could send donations. They wrote a letter to Principal Johnson explaining their idea. After they got his approval, they wrote and typed a message to Stony Point students. Over the loudspeaker, they read their letter and asked Stony Point students and staff for their support in helping save the rainforest. So far, they have collected nearly twenty dollars! Below is a picture of a stand the group of students made to collect funds in the school. It is made completely of cardboard provided by the Stony Point Ispace. This week, fourth graders took part in an Art project with student teacher, Ms. Fan. Students used objects from nature to create impressions in clay that will be used to create a mural. Students also wrote about connections they have with nature and why it is important to protect our natural surroundings, a connection to our ongoing study of natural resources. Check out the photos below! Last week, students had the opportunity to take part in two unique artistic activities. First, students visited the Japanese Garden with Ms. Mary Lou where they sketched any choice object in the natural setting. Then, students took part in an "accidental design" project with Ms. Passman and Mr. Johnson. They experimented with different materials and questioned how handling the materials in different ways ended with different results. Check out the photos below!
