It was a beautiful day for hands-on science at Camp Albemarle! With the sun shining brilliantly on a warm early fall day, fourth grade students had the opportunity to take part in four distinct hands-on science stations at the camp. They caught and documented organisms in a tributary of the Rivanna River, took part in the game " Oh Deer," went on a nature walk, and learned about how pollution affects watersheds. " Collect and document as many patterns as you can find. You may decide to use patterns found in nature, human made patterns, or both. Make something out of the patterns you find."
This week, students responded to the school-wide maker prompt quoted above. It was amazing to see what students developed. In our class, we had students create animal patterns relating to our ongoing study of ecosystems, a variety of zentangles, and patterns that represented fashion and other art forms. Additionally, students picked a topic for their First Quarter Writer's Tea project. Students were asked to pick a question about an animal or plant that they can research. In the upcoming weeks, students will be researching for the answer to this question. They will also look for other interesting facts about their topic. When all their research is done, students will create an informative paragraph that will be combined with a portrait of their plant or animal. Check out some of the photos below of students working on their pattern projects and animal and plant portraits in Art! Students enjoyed another engaging week in fourth grade. This week students had an opportunity to build and utilize "place value parking lots," meet first grade book buddies, and, best of all, observe and handle earthworms as part of our ongoing study of ecosystems. It 's only the conclusion of our third week of school, and students have already experienced many exciting moments in fourth grade! These include; building a snow student on the first day of school, building and testing paper airplane models using the scientific method, and experiencing Stony Point's unique nature trail from the viewpoint of an animal.
