Recently, students have been working with the 123 Design application in class. 123 Design is a C.A.D. (Computer Aided Design) program in which a student can create three dimensional objects using applications of measurement and geometry. After creating an object, it can be printed by a 3D printer. Students are now using the skills they have learned while working with 123 Design to create a Native American artifact. The artifact represents the Native American cultures that they have learned about recently in Social Studies. This week, students concentrated on picking an artifact, drawing it, measuring its dimensions, and writing a justification paragraph that explained why they chose that particular artifact. Students look forward to creating and printing their artifact with the help of middle school students from Sutherland Middle school in the near future!

On Thursday, the Stony Point student body was treated to a performance of Alice in Wonderland by the drama club. It was a wonderful performance! Fourth grade students and staff would like to congratulate all students, staff, and parents that were involved in making the performance happen.
On Tuesday, students traveled to the beautiful Paramount Theatre to watch a performance of Freedom Bound. The play chronicled the true story of slave, Addison White. In 1856, Addison White traveled from Kentucky to Ohio on the Underground Railroad. While he was in Ohio, White was given work and shelter by abolitionist, Udney Hyde. In the end, Hyde and the citizens of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, purchased Addison White’s freedom from his slave owner who pursued him from Kentucky. The play was a great learning experience for students, and it tied into several learning standards that are taught later during the year in social studies.
In fourth grade, students spend a period of time weekly with their first grade book buddies. During this time, fourth graders read to their younger counterparts. First graders enjoy listening to older students read. The activity also gives fourth graders an opportunity to enhance their own reading skills. Last week, book buddies worked on a science based maker prompt instead of reading. In first grade, students are focusing on force, energy and motion. Fourth graders focus on similar topics during the spring. Teachers thought it would be a great opportunity to try something new and have book buddies work together on a maker prompt tied into force, energy, and motion. The prompt, as it was phrased to students, can be seen below. On Friday, book buddies ( or maker buddies in this case) focused on the design of their car. This upcoming week, they will visit the ispace to create their car. We hope to test cars by the middle of the month. Take a look at the meaningful collaboration that happened during the first step of this project. Both fourth graders and first graders look forward to the rest of the project!
