In fourth grade, students spend a period of time weekly with their first grade book buddies. During this time, fourth graders read to their younger counterparts. First graders enjoy listening to older students read. The activity also gives fourth graders an opportunity to enhance their own reading skills.
Last week, book buddies worked on a science based maker prompt instead of reading. In first grade, students are focusing on force, energy and motion. Fourth graders focus on similar topics during the spring. Teachers thought it would be a great opportunity to try something new and have book buddies work together on a maker prompt tied into force, energy, and motion. The prompt, as it was phrased to students, can be seen below.

On Friday, book buddies ( or maker buddies in this case) focused on the design of their car. This upcoming week, they will visit the ispace to create their car. We hope to test cars by the middle of the month. Take a look at the meaningful collaboration that happened during the first step of this project.
Both fourth graders and first graders look forward to the rest of the project!
